Rolex Oyster - Waterproof Watch That Swam The Channel

Rolex watches are some of the highest quality and most expensive watches in the world. When most people hear the name Rolex, they don't really know the story behind it, and they don't know how it got to the position in the watch industry that it is currently in.

One of the reasons that Rolex watches become so popular and so well known was the company's unique innovation of watches. One of these innovations came in the form of a waterproof watch case that would change the history of watches and make Rolex a well known watch brand for many decades to come.

The Waterproof Case As An Innovation

Back in the early 1900s, most watches would quickly get dirt, grit and water in them. While many watches made back then were high quality, there simply wasn't an effective method of keeping them free of dirt and water. Back in those days, seeing people take apart their watches to thoroughly clean them in their spare time was quite common.

However, in 1926 Rolex patented the first waterproof watch case ever in the history of watches. The Oyster, which was named after the oyster of the sea that is quite hard to crack, was its name.

The Oyster Sparks A Revolution And Increases The Popularity Of Rolex

The Oyster Perpetual was the first truly waterproof watch case ever designed, and it worked very well. During that particular time period, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual made Rolex watches the only ones in the world that were waterproof.

In 1927, a swimmer named Mercedes Gleitze set out to swim across the English Channel, and she did it while wearing a waterproof Rolex watch. Not only was this an excellent feat for her as well as the Rolex Oyster Perpetual, it was a huge marketing and popularity boost for Rolex.

When Mercedes Gleitze reached the other side of the English Channel, no moisture, drops of water or condensation had found its way through the waterproof watch case.

Rolex Uses The Oyster After Its Initial Introduction

In its future watches, Rolex used the Oyster as its main waterproof watch case. The Oyster helped cement the reputation that Rolex had as one of the highest quality watches in the world, and it helped to make
Rolex watches seem almost impermeable.

Of course, other waterproof cases were made after the Oyster, but none of them had the same impact on the watch brand or on the popularity of a watch as the Oyster did with Rolex.
